Psalm 72: Of Solomon [A Messianic Psalm]

Psalms 72:1-20 NKJV
[1] Give the king Your judgments, O God, And Your righteousness to the king’s Son. [2] He will judge Your people with righteousness, And Your poor with justice. [3] The mountains will bring peace to the people, And the little hills, by righteousness. [4] He will bring justice to the poor of the people; He will save the children of the needy, And will break in pieces the oppressor. [5] They shall fear You As long as the sun and moon endure, Throughout all generations. [6] He shall come down like rain upon the grass before mowing, Like showers that water the earth. [7] In His days the righteous shall flourish, And abundance of peace, Until the moon is no more. [8] He shall have dominion also from sea to sea, And from the River to the ends of the earth. [9] Those who dwell in the wilderness will bow before Him, And His enemies will lick the dust. [10] The kings of Tarshish and of the isles Will bring presents; The kings of Sheba and Seba Will offer gifts. [11] Yes, all kings shall fall down before Him; All nations shall serve Him. [12] For He will deliver the needy when he cries, The poor also, and him who has no helper. [13] He will spare the poor and needy, And will save the souls of the needy. [14] He will redeem their life from oppression and violence; And precious shall be their blood in His sight. [15] And He shall live; And the gold of Sheba will be given to Him; Prayer also will be made for Him continually, And daily He shall be praised. [16] There will be an abundance of grain in the earth, On the top of the mountains; Its fruit shall wave like Lebanon; And those of the city shall flourish like grass of the earth. [17] His name shall endure forever; His name shall continue as long as the sun. And men shall be blessed in Him; All nations shall call Him blessed. [18] Blessed be the Lord God, the God of Israel, Who only does wondrous things! [19] And blessed be His glorious name forever! And let the whole earth be filled with His glory. Amen and Amen. [20] The prayers of David the son of Jesse are ended.

Psalm 72 is "a prayer for the king, a son of David, who rules on David's throne as God's earthly regent over his people. It may have been used at the time of the king's coronation (as were Psalm 2; 110)... They express the desire of the nation that the king's reign will, as a consequence of God's endowment of His servant, be characterized by justice and righteousness, the supreme virtues of kingship. The prayer reflects the ideal concept of the king and the glorious effects of his reign. See Jeremiah's indictment of some of the Davidic kings (Jeremiah 22) and the prophetic announcement of the Messiah's righteous rule (See Isaiah 9:7; 11:4-5; Jeremiah 23:5-6; 33:15-16; Zechariah 9:9). Later Jewish tradition saw in this Psalm a description of the Messiah, as did the early church...". (NIV Study Bible text note).

Jeremiah's indictment of some of the Davidic kings

Jeremiah 22:1-30 NKJV
[1] Thus says the Lord: “Go down to the house of the king of Judah, and there speak this word, [2] and say, ‘Hear the word of the Lord, O king of Judah, you who sit on the throne of David, you and your servants and your people who enter these gates! [3] Thus says the Lord: “Execute judgment and righteousness, and deliver the plundered out of the hand of the oppressor. Do no wrong and do no violence to the stranger, the fatherless, or the widow, nor shed innocent blood in this place. [4] For if you indeed do this thing, then shall enter the gates of this house, riding on horses and in chariots, accompanied by servants and people, kings who sit on the throne of David. [5] But if you will not hear these words, I swear by Myself,” says the Lord, “that this house shall become a desolation.” ’ ” [6] For thus says the Lord to the house of the king of Judah: “You are Gilead to Me, The head of Lebanon; Yet I surely will make you a wilderness, Cities which are not inhabited. [7] I will prepare destroyers against you, Everyone with his weapons; They shall cut down your choice cedars And cast them into the fire. [8] And many nations will pass by this city; and everyone will say to his neighbor, ‘Why has the Lord done so to this great city?’ [9] Then they will answer, ‘Because they have forsaken the covenant of the Lord their God, and worshiped other gods and served them.’ ” [10] Weep not for the dead, nor bemoan him; Weep bitterly for him who goes away, For he shall return no more, Nor see his native country. [11] For thus says the Lord concerning Shallum the son of Josiah, king of Judah, who reigned instead of Josiah his father, who went from this place: “He shall not return here anymore, [12] but he shall die in the place where they have led him captive, and shall see this land no more. [13] “Woe to him who builds his house by unrighteousness And his chambers by injustice, Who uses his neighbor’s service without wages And gives him nothing for his work, [14] Who says, ‘I will build myself a wide house with spacious chambers, And cut out windows for it, Paneling it with cedar And painting it with vermilion.’ [15] “Shall you reign because you enclose yourself in cedar? Did not your father eat and drink, And do justice and righteousness? Then it was well with him. [16] He judged the cause of the poor and needy; Then it was well. Was not this knowing Me?” says the Lord. [17] “Yet your eyes and your heart are for nothing but your covetousness, For shedding innocent blood, And practicing oppression and violence.” [18] Therefore thus says the Lord concerning Jehoiakim the son of Josiah, king of Judah: “They shall not lament for him, Saying, ‘Alas, my brother!’ or ‘Alas, my sister!’ They shall not lament for him, Saying, ‘Alas, master!’ or ‘Alas, his glory!’ [19] He shall be buried with the burial of a donkey, Dragged and cast out beyond the gates of Jerusalem. [20] “Go up to Lebanon, and cry out, And lift up your voice in Bashan; Cry from Abarim, For all your lovers are destroyed. [21] I spoke to you in your prosperity, But you said, ‘I will not hear.’ This has been your manner from your youth, That you did not obey My voice. [22] The wind shall eat up all your rulers, And your lovers shall go into captivity; Surely then you will be ashamed and humiliated For all your wickedness. [23] O inhabitant of Lebanon, Making your nest in the cedars, How gracious will you be when pangs come upon you, Like the pain of a woman in labor? [24] “As I live,” says the Lord, “though Coniah the son of Jehoiakim, king of Judah, were the signet on My right hand, yet I would pluck you off; [25] and I will give you into the hand of those who seek your life, and into the hand of those whose face you fear—the hand of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon and the hand of the Chaldeans. [26] So I will cast you out, and your mother who bore you, into another country where you were not born; and there you shall die. [27] But to the land to which they desire to return, there they shall not return. [28] “Is this man Coniah a despised, broken idol— A vessel in which is no pleasure? Why are they cast out, he and his descendants, And cast into a land which they do not know? [29] O earth, earth, earth, Hear the word of the Lord! [30] Thus says the Lord: ‘Write this man down as childless, A man who shall not prosper in his days; For none of his descendants shall prosper, Sitting on the throne of David, And ruling anymore in Judah.’ ”

Zedekiah, the last king of Judah, was probably king at this time, but the message was directed to all the kings of Judah who represented the Davidic dynasty. Some of Zedekiah's predecessors are also mentioned in the passage: Josiah, Jehoahaz/Shallum, Jehoiakim, and Jehoiachin/Coniah. Jeremiah's prophecy is a warning to the kings of Judah to do what is just and right, or be destroyed as a nation. Judah did not comply, and was conquered by Babylon who destroyed Jerusalem, the temple, and took the Israelites captive. The kingdom of Judah was wiped out, bringing David's dynasty to an end, until the Messiah came and took the throne and began the establishment of His eternal Kingdom. "[17] His name shall endure forever; His name shall continue as long as the sun. And men shall be blessed in Him; All nations shall call Him blessed. [18] Blessed be the Lord God, the God of Israel, Who only does wondrous things! [19] And blessed be His glorious name forever! And let the whole earth be filled with His glory." "[He]shall set His hand again the second time to recover the remnant of His people who are left, From Assyria and Egypt, From Pathros and Cush, From Elam and Shinar, From Hamath and the islands of the sea. [12] He will set up a banner for the nations, And will assemble the outcasts of Israel, And gather together the dispersed of Judah From the four corners of the earth."

Amen! Come Lord Jesus!!

Prophetic announcements of the Messiah's righteous rule

Isaiah 9:6-7 NKJV
[6] For unto us a Child is born, Unto us a Son is given; And the government will be upon His shoulder. And His name will be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. [7] Of the increase of His government and peace There will be no end, Upon the throne of David and over His kingdom, To order it and establish it with judgment and justice From that time forward, even forever. The zeal of the Lord of hosts will perform this.

Isaiah 11:1-12 NKJV
[1] There shall come forth a Rod from the stem of Jesse, And a Branch shall grow out of his roots. [2] The Spirit of the Lord shall rest upon Him, The Spirit of wisdom and understanding, The Spirit of counsel and might, The Spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the Lord. [3] His delight is in the fear of the Lord, And He shall not judge by the sight of His eyes, Nor decide by the hearing of His ears; [4] But with righteousness He shall judge the poor, And decide with equity for the meek of the earth; He shall strike the earth with the rod of His mouth, And with the breath of His lips He shall slay the wicked. [5] Righteousness shall be the belt of His loins, And faithfulness the belt of His waist. [6] “The wolf also shall dwell with the lamb, The leopard shall lie down with the young goat, The calf and the young lion and the fatling together; And a little child shall lead them. [7] The cow and the bear shall graze; Their young ones shall lie down together; And the lion shall eat straw like the ox. [8] The nursing child shall play by the cobra’s hole, And the weaned child shall put his hand in the viper’s den. [9] They shall not hurt nor destroy in all My holy mountain, For the earth shall be full of the knowledge of the Lord As the waters cover the sea. [10] “And in that day there shall be a Root of Jesse, Who shall stand as a banner to the people; For the Gentiles shall seek Him, And His resting place shall be glorious.” [11] It shall come to pass in that day That the Lord shall set His hand again the second time To recover the remnant of His people who are left, From Assyria and Egypt, From Pathros and Cush, From Elam and Shinar, From Hamath and the islands of the sea. [12] He will set up a banner for the nations, And will assemble the outcasts of Israel, And gather together the dispersed of Judah From the four corners of the earth.

Jeremiah 23:1-6 NKJV
[1] “Woe to the shepherds who destroy and scatter the sheep of My pasture!” says the Lord. [2] Therefore thus says the Lord God of Israel against the shepherds who feed My people: “You have scattered My flock, driven them away, and not attended to them. Behold, I will attend to you for the evil of your doings,” says the Lord. [3] “But I will gather the remnant of My flock out of all countries where I have driven them, and bring them back to their folds; and they shall be fruitful and increase. [4] I will set up shepherds over them who will feed them; and they shall fear no more, nor be dismayed, nor shall they be lacking,” says the Lord. [5] “Behold, the days are coming,” says the Lord, “That I will raise to David a Branch of righteousness; A King shall reign and prosper, And execute judgment and righteousness in the earth. [6] In His days Judah will be saved, And Israel will dwell safely; Now this is His name by which He will be called: THE LORD OUR RIGHTEOUSNESS.

Jeremiah 33:14-16 NKJV
[14] ‘Behold, the days are coming,’ says the Lord, ‘that I will perform that good thing which I have promised to the house of Israel and to the house of Judah: [15] ‘In those days and at that time I will cause to grow up to David A Branch of righteousness; He shall execute judgment and righteousness in the earth. [16] In those days Judah will be saved, And Jerusalem will dwell safely. And this is the name by which she will be called: THE LORD OUR RIGHTEOUSNESS.’

Zechariah 9:9 NKJV
[9] “Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion! Shout, O daughter of Jerusalem! Behold, your King is coming to you; He is just and having salvation, Lowly and riding on a donkey, A colt, the foal of a donkey.
