Pray for the World: Christians in Eritrea

Please join us in praying for Christians within the nation of Eritrea. 

“The apostles left the Sanhedrin, rejoicing because they had been counted worthy of suffering disgrace for the Name.” -Acts 5:41

Eritrea is located in Northeast Africa and is bordered by the nations of Sudan and Ethiopia to the West, Djibouti to the South and the Red Sea to the East. 

The major religions in Eritrea are Islam at approximately 47 %  and Christianity at approximately 49%. The Voice of the Martyrs characterizes Eritrea as a Restricted nation meaning that government sanctioned circumstances or anti-Christian laws lead to Christians being harassed, imprisoned, killed or deprived of possessions or liberties because of their witness. Restricted also include countries where government policy or practice prevents Christians from obtaining Bibles or other Christian literature.

Eritrea is listed as number ten on Open Doors USA 2017 World Watch List due to its severe persecution of Christians.

Although the statistics show that Christianity is one of the major religions, according to PeopleGroups.org., Eritrea contains 17 people groups of which 17 are unreached (UPG) and of which 15 are unreached and unengaged (UUPG).

Please pray for our brothers and sisters in Eritrea:

• Pray that imprisoned Christians will be strengthened and encouraged by remembering Christ’s sufferings and that they will be a light in the darkness.
• Pray that God will open doors for Christian workers to return to Eritrea.
• Pray that God would change the hearts of government leaders and allow Christians to worship freely.
• Pray for the release of over 300,000 imprisoned and tortured believers.
• Since May 2017, nearly 200 Christians have been arrested. Entire families are being arrested, leaving children without parents or guardians. Security police are monitoring them to make sure they don’t get support from the Christian community. Please pray for all those affected by arrests, especially for the children.
