Love Your Enemies: Sudanese Islamist Regime

"You have heard that it was said, 'Love your neighbor and hate your enemy.' But I tell you: Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, that you may be sons of your Father in heaven." ~ Jesus (Matthew 5:43-45).

In order to have a better understand how to pray, it's helpful to know who it is we're praying for. Jesus tells us to love our enemies and pray for those who persecute us. As we begin to pray for persecuted Christians in Sudan, we encourage you to also pray for those who are persecuting them.

Umar Hassan Ahmad al-Bashir suspended all political power and began introducing Sharia law after obtaining power over Sudan in 1989. Leader of the National Islamic Front, Hassan al-Turabi assisted Bashir with the re-establishment of Sharia law in northern Sudan. Opponents were executed and hundreds of leading political leaders and journalists were imprisoned.

Bashir's National Congress Party was in complete control by 1993 and in 1996, Bashir was elected president. However, he did not allow any significant opposition candidates. Bashir was reelected as president in 2000 in another controlled and manipulated election.

In 2009, Bashir was indicted by the International Criminal Court for his personal involvement and approval of war crimes, including genocide, in the Darfur region of Sudan. As of late 2015 he had yet to be arrested.

Christians living in the Nuba Mountains are under continual threat of bombing by Bashir's Russian-made Antonov bombers, which have targeted churches, Christian schools and hospitals.
